Anthropic has released an updated version of its mid-tier model, Claude Sonnet 5.5, focusing on speed and cost-effectiveness. According to the company, the new iteration is 30% faster than its predecessor and requires lower usage costs, making it an attractive candidate for everyday tasks such as coding and creating office documents. The previous version, Sonnet 5, released just three months ago, focused on reducing the cost of deploying agents.

The key differentiator for Sonnet 5.5 is its speed. Anthropic claims the model consumes tokens significantly faster. Interestingly, despite positioning Sonnet as a less powerful alternative to the flagship Opus series, in some tests, Sonnet 5.5 outperformed Opus 5.5 in agent coding tasks. This could be due to the ability to run multiple agents simultaneously without a significant cost increase.

Furthermore, Sonnet 5.5 has received enhanced cybersecurity protections, reaching Opus 5's level. This is the first model in the Sonnet line equipped with network security mechanisms comparable to flagship models. Anthropic has also announced the upcoming release of a new version of its most compact model, Haiku, but an exact release date has not yet been disclosed. Competition in the AI model space continues to heat up, with new versions from major players like OpenAI and Meta appearing with enviable regularity.
