Modern digital snapshots often get lost in folders, scrolled past, and forgotten almost instantly. A digital camera with "digital film" offers a different approach, turning each frame into a physical object. The device captures an image digitally and then writes it to a small cartridge with e-paper. This cartridge can be removed and placed on a desk, resulting in something more akin to a printed photograph than a file on a smartphone.
The essence of the technology lies within the cartridge itself. After inserting it into a slot in the camera body, made from 3D-printed parts, pressing the shutter button activates a 5-megapixel camera module controlled by a Raspberry Pi. The image is displayed on the e-paper screen inside the cartridge, which, after a slight delay, fixes the final shot.
The screen supports only four colors: black, white, red, and yellow. This is a deliberate limitation, not a technical flaw. It allows the processing script not only to reduce the palette but also to fine-tune contrast, brightness, saturation, and sharpness, achieving an expressive look reminiscent of stencil printing.
The process of obtaining a snapshot here rewards patience, not speed. Once exposure is complete, the cartridge can be removed. The image on it is retained even when powered off, turning the small rectangle into a physical object that can be propped against a monitor or attached to a refrigerator. This is the tangibility that chemical film once provided, and which most digital cameras have lost.
At the same time, by reinserting the cartridge, a new shot can be recorded, completely erasing the previous one. The main design decision here is the film, which behaves like film until you decide otherwise, and then transforms into a semblance of a hard drive. No cartridge is unique, like a Polaroid frame, as nothing is lost during rewriting. Nevertheless, each one holds an image with enough physical weight to feel valuable and worthy of preservation for a time.
The camera's construction itself is screwless, using pin connectors for reliable contact between the cartridge and the pins. Later, a small tab was added for easy removal, so the process doesn't turn into a struggle. This is a minor detail, but important for a device whose entire essence is in the pleasant tactile sensation of changing cartridges. It's more like taking a finished photo out of a machine than removing a memory card.
This project quietly poses a question: what exactly has digital photography lost along the way? Infinite storage solved the problem of scarcity but erased the ritual of a photograph existing outside the screen. This camera doesn't aim to outperform competitors in specifications. It simply explores what happens when a snapshot has to earn its place in the slot before it's allowed to be forgotten.
