The "first mile" problem in logistics – delivering raw materials from source to distribution point – often goes unnoticed, while innovations focus on the final stage. Four design students from the University of Bologna have presented the ATTA project, a human-powered three-wheeled cargo bike with a built-in lifting mechanism, designed to solve this problem for banana farmers in rural Kenya. ATTA won first place at the Toyota Logistic Design Competition 2026. The name ATTA, referencing the genus of leafcutter ants, highlights the project's philosophy: optimizing for existing conditions rather than creating overly complex machines. The bike is designed to be simple to operate and maintain, utilizing local resources instead of requiring imported parts or specialized technicians. This is a response to a specific but persistent problem in Kenyan banana farming: transporting heavy bunches over uneven terrain with minimal infrastructure. The integrated forklift-like lifting mechanism reduces the physical strain of loading and unloading. This not only eases the farmer's labor but also minimizes fruit damage during transport, directly impacting the income of smallholdings. The ATTA project demonstrates how a precise understanding of real needs and a rejection of ostentatious futurism can lead to a truly useful and practical solution. ATTA doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. It asks what real benefit a vehicle can bring to someone who desperately needs it and brings that answer to life. It's an example of how design focused on a specific task and user can have a significant impact on the lives of people working far from centers of technological progress.
